Stuff that works

There's a song by Guy Clark that's titled "Stuff That Works".  I like to play and sing it when I'm with my musician buddies.  The song talks about what's real and what has substance.  We, as writers, can apply that to our work.

Some people have asked me how often should they write.  In the beginning stages of your career, you need to write as often as you can.  Does that mean every day?  Sure, if you can.  If not, don't worry about it.  Whenever you put down words, make sure they are the best they can be.  Make sure they're commercial.

The next question is always "how do I know what's commercial?"  Read what prominent authors write.  Read the best sellers.  Then, by no means, copy other writers.  Find your voice.  But, incorporate what works for you into your work.  If the story is good, people will like it.

True ghost stories

High Falls on Town Creek in DeKalb County, Ala.  In nice weather, it's a pleasant place to visit and picnic or bring a date.  In fact, in the 1850s it was the favorite place to meet for a couple who fell in love and would soon marry.  But, in stormy conditions, the stream becomes a raging torrent.  Such was the case on their wedding day.  The couple was swept over the falls and under the water, never to resurface.  Or did they?  Two apparitions are sometimes seen holding hands on the bank of the creek.  I personally have felt a sudden drop in temperature, as much as 30 degrees, on a hot day.  The newlyweds?  Could be.

This is just one of the stories in my book "Hollers From The Hollows".  It is a collection of true ghost stories from historic DeKalb County.  The tales have been compared to those penned by Alabama's favorite storyteller, Kathryn Tucker Windham.  In fact, yesterday at the 33rd annual Rhododendron Festival in Mentone, a guy came up to me and said he was pleased to meet THE Greg Starnes.  Wow!  I'm glad my book is making a splash of its own.

Writers' blocks

I was recently asked by another writer what to do when you get blocked.  There are several techniques that I employ.  Writer's block is inevitable.  Don't fight it.  Don't try to avoid it, because it will follow you around.  Use it.  When a block presents itself, sit down on it and rest.  Stand up on it and survey the writing landscape.  Inspiration is on its way.  Scan the horizon and wait on it.  Don't give up; it will find you.

It's true blocks are solid and heavy.  But, they are good building material.  Instead of trying to move them, use them for your good.  Let them help you achieve your goal of a winning manuscript.

The ruins at New Manchester

The brick and rock walls are all that remain of what once the tallest building in the state of Georgia.  In 1861 the operators converted the factory into a military facility, making uniforms and tents for Southern soldiers.  On July 2, 1864, the town was captured and the mill burned on July 8.  Women and children were then shipped north to Louisville, Kentucky.  Few made it back to their home in Georgia.  Today, the ruins are part of Sweetwater Creek State Conservation Park.  Located near Lithia Springs, Ga., the park offers hiking, boating, picnicking and fishing.  It's rated one of the state's best.  Recently, my friend, Valorie Cooper, and I spent a lovely day at the park.  I highly recommend a visit.
