The story's the thing

I've been to several seminars and conferences where writers talk about marketing and publicity.  While it's true that authors have to be active in getting their work noticed through social and traditional media, it really all comes back to the story.  The story is the key.  When it's good, people will like it.  When people like it, they tend to offer advice on how to market.  When people offer advice, some of it is really good and works for you.  When it works for you, sales increase.  When sales increase, confidence rises.  Success is what we all strive for on a daily basis.
